Day 27: Sandy Bordeaux

Day 27: Sandy Bordeaux

It rained last night and is overcast this morning. Still, we want to try to avoid the city today because the Euro2016 semifinal game is in Bordeaux tonight. We think the city will be flooded with Italians and Germans here to root for their teams. So despite the weather, we decide to go to the beach!

We drive out to Cap Ferret, not to be confused with Cap Ferrat in the French Riviera. This place is rustic, out on the end of a peninsula and not well known to non-French tourists. I found it because I wanted to visit a beach while we were so close to the Atlantic Ocean. We drive for almost an hour down to the very tip of the land. It’s very pretty but no beach. We ate lunch at Chez Hortense, a lovely (and expensive) place right there by the “beach”. This area is particularly known for their oysters, which are good but a bit large for our taste. The mussels are amazing! Super garlicky. Lillian eats most of them, of course. It’s one of her favorite foods. She eats a few oysters as well, but keeps shoveling in the mussels. We also have sole and sea bass, cooked whole. They are delicious.

We can barely move after this feast. Still we manage to walk along the water and find a sandy beach. Not only is it sandy, but it’s that super fine soft sand that feels so good. Lillian is the happiest to be at the beach. Stefan and I have never been big fans. But I am confident we will get used to going to the beach with the kids.

Lillian makes sand ice cream (thank you, Ikea) while Oly searches for sea shells then throws them in the ocean. Neither of the kids is comfortable getting in the water, but Oly avoids it completely.

It takes Oly only a few minutes to fall asleep when we get in the car. We stop at an adorable stand in Cap Ferret for some water, and I see the most beautiful rotisserie chickens. Stefan is obsessed with rotisserie chicken. Actually pretty much anything that cooks very slowly. So I buy one for dinner.

We get home and shower, but the kids now remind us we promised (did we really promise?) them ice cream this afternoon. So we drive to the grocery store. This is a bit insane. I love going to grocery stores in other countries, so I can get a little crazy. But the kids are the same way in all grocery stores, so it was a bit much. We basically bought one of everything they sell. To my credit, we have been extremely short on groceries this past week, largely due to our limited kitchen at the last house, so I was over-excited to get stocked up again.

The kids eat their ice cream, and we play some cards (Crazy-8s is still the current favorite) on the patio. And yes, we have a ton of delicious cheese and white wine too.

The chicken turned out bland! Too bad. Luckily we have wine and cheese. Who really needs anything else?!
The kids watch a movie again tonight while we try to catch up on some stuff. We hope to finally watch Batman v. Superman tonight! Fingers crossed the kids go to bed at a normal time.
